INFOTICS Skill Labs — Windows Server interview questions

20 questions employers ask, each with a model answer, what the interviewer is checking and the likely follow-up.
1 HR & behaviorProblem solvingMid level

Tell me about a challenging technical problem you solved. What was your approach?

Use the STAR method: briefly set the Situation and Task, then spend most of your answer on the Action — how you broke the problem down, what you tried, how you tested — and finish with the Result and what you learned. Pick a real example with a measurable outcome (time saved, outage resolved) and show your reasoning, not just the fix.

How do you keep Windows Servers patched consistently?

Use WSUS or Azure Update Manager to approve and schedule updates across servers in rings (test first, then production), with maintenance windows and reboot control. Monitor compliance reports to catch servers that fell behind. Consistent patching closes known vulnerabilities and is a basic operational control.

3 HR & behaviorOwnershipMid level

Tell me about a time something you built or deployed failed. What did you do and what did you learn?

Pick a real failure and own it without blaming others. Describe how you contained the impact, communicated honestly, fixed the root cause (not just the symptom), and added a safeguard — a test, a monitor, a checklist, a runbook — so it cannot recur. Interviewers want accountability and a blameless, learning mindset, not a claim that you never fail.

4 TechnicalActive DirectoryMid level

Walk me through promoting a server to a domain controller.

Install the AD DS role (Install-WindowsFeature AD-Domain-Services), then promote it: for a new forest Install-ADDSForest, or to join an existing domain Install-ADDSDomainController, choosing whether it is a global catalog and/or DNS. After reboot, verify with dcdiag and repadmin /replsummary that health and replication are good.

5 HR & behaviorWorking under pressureSenior

Describe a time you had to make a decision with incomplete information and a tight deadline.

Explain how you gathered the facts you could quickly, identified the biggest risk, made a reversible decision where possible, and set a point to re-evaluate. Note how you communicated the uncertainty and your assumptions. Show judgement and bias for action — making a sound call and adjusting beats waiting for perfect information.

How did you do?
6 HR & behaviorLeadershipSenior

Have you mentored or led a junior team member? How did you help them grow?

Give a concrete example: how you set clear expectations, paired on real work, let them struggle productively before stepping in, gave specific feedback, and gradually handed over ownership. Mention a result — they shipped something, passed a certification, became independent. Leadership is about multiplying others, not doing it all yourself.

7 TechnicalStorageSenior

What is Storage Spaces, and when would you use it?

Storage Spaces pools physical disks into a virtual pool from which you create resilient virtual disks (mirror, parity) — software-defined RAID. Storage Spaces Direct (S2D) extends this across a cluster for hyper-converged storage. Use it to get resilience and flexible capacity from commodity disks without a hardware RAID controller.

The field changes fast. How do you keep your skills current?

Be specific and show it is a habit: hands-on labs and home projects, following release notes and a few trusted sources, a certification roadmap, reading other people’s code or post-mortems, and teaching others to cement what you learn. Tie it to this role’s stack. Enthusiasm plus a concrete routine beats a vague "I love learning".

9 TechnicalTroubleshootingMid level

A service fails to start after a reboot. How do you diagnose it on Windows Server?

Check the service in services.msc / Get-Service for its state and start type, then read Event Viewer (System and Application logs) for the error and dependency failures. Verify the service account and permissions, and dependencies (Get-Service -DependentServices). Try starting it manually to capture the exact error, then fix the root cause.

10 HR & behaviorStakeholdersEntry level

How do you keep stakeholders informed during a long incident or project?

Set a cadence and a single source of truth: short, regular updates in plain language with status, impact, next step and ETA — even when the news is "no change yet". Tailor the detail to the audience and never let people find out bad news late. Reliable, proactive communication builds the trust that lets you do the technical work.

11 TechnicalNetworkingMid level

What roles do DNS and DHCP play, and how do you keep DHCP highly available?

DNS resolves names to IPs (and is essential for AD). DHCP leases IP configuration to clients automatically. For high availability, configure DHCP failover between two servers (hot-standby or load-sharing) so leases continue if one server is down, or use a split-scope. Reservations give specific devices a fixed address.

12 HR & behaviorPrioritisationMid level

A production outage, a hard deadline and your manager’s request all land at once. How do you prioritise?

Protect the business first: a production outage affecting users usually wins. State your rule — impact and urgency over who is shouting loudest — communicate quickly to set expectations, delegate or ask for help, and park or renegotiate the lower-impact items with their owners. Show calm, a clear framework, and that you keep people informed.

13 TechnicalReliabilityMid level

What is Failover Clustering and what does it provide?

Failover Clustering groups servers (nodes) so that a clustered role (file server, Hyper-V VM, SQL) automatically moves to another node if one fails, providing high availability. It uses shared or S2D storage and a quorum to decide which nodes stay online. You validate the configuration before creating the cluster.

14 HR & behaviorCommunicationMid level

How do you explain a complex technical issue to a non-technical manager or client?

Lead with the impact in their terms (cost, risk, time, customers affected), not the technical cause. Use a simple analogy, avoid jargon, and offer a clear recommendation with options and trade-offs. Confirm they have understood and tell them what you need from them. The goal is a confident decision, not to show how much you know.

15 HR & behaviorTeamworkMid level

Describe a disagreement with a colleague over a technical decision and how you resolved it.

Show that you separated the person from the problem. Explain how you listened to their reasoning, brought data or a small proof of concept instead of opinions, looked for the shared goal (reliability, deadline, cost), and either reached agreement or disagreed-and-committed to the team’s decision. Avoid blaming; emphasise the outcome and the relationship staying intact.

16 TechnicalRoles & featuresEntry level

How do you install a server role such as DNS, and how is Server Core different?

Install roles with Server Manager (Add Roles and Features) or PowerShell: Install-WindowsFeature DNS -IncludeManagementTools. Server Core has no desktop GUI — you manage it remotely (Windows Admin Center, RSAT, PowerShell), which reduces attack surface, patching and resource use. Choose Core for infrastructure roles where no local GUI is needed.

How do you harden a Windows Server and manage local admin passwords?

Apply least privilege and tiered admin, keep it patched (WSUS/Update), enable Windows Defender and the firewall, disable unused roles/services and legacy protocols (SMBv1), and use Windows LAPS to automatically set and rotate a unique local Administrator password per server stored in AD/Entra. Audit sign-ins and privileged group changes.

18 HR & behaviorMotivation & fitEntry level

Why do you want this role, and what do you want to be doing in three years?

Connect your answer to the actual job and company: what about the work, the stack or the mission fits your strengths and goals. For the three-year question, show healthy ambition and direction (deeper expertise, more ownership, perhaps leading) that the company could realistically support, so it reads as commitment, not a stepping stone.

How did you do?
19 TechnicalHyper-VMid level

What is a checkpoint in Hyper-V, and why avoid using it as a backup?

A checkpoint captures a VM’s state at a point in time using differencing disks for rollback (e.g. before an update). It is not a backup: it depends on the parent disks, grows over time hurting performance, and is not application-consistent for long-term retention. Use a proper backup (Windows Server Backup or a backup product) and remove checkpoints promptly.

How did you do?
20 TechnicalGroup PolicyMid level

How does Group Policy apply, and how do you target a policy to one department?

GPOs apply in Local, Site, Domain, OU order (LSDOU); the last applied wins. To target a department, link the GPO to that department’s OU, or use security filtering so it applies only to a specific security group. Use gpupdate /force to apply now and gpresult to see the resultant set of policy.
